The Short Story:

Sammy Yuen is a Freelance Designer and Illustrator who lives in New York City.

The Long Story:

Growing up in Boston from age 3 to 17, Sammy preferred to spend his class time doodling (despite his teacher’s dismay) and his free time playing on an Apple IIe. There was one point in Sammy’s life that his mom said to him, “One day, you’ll create art on this.” Naturally, Sammy thought she was crazy. Fast forward about a decade (give or take) and Sammy, an Illustration major from Syracuse University, is hit with the realization that his mom had psychic abilities and doodling in Calculus was the best thing he could have done. Not recommended for other kids.

From there, Sammy worked in Boston at Penguin Putnam and Houghton Mifflin, designing and illustrating book covers before making his move to Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing in New York City.

After ten years at S&S, Sammy left to become a full-time freelancer, working with publishing houses around the world. Sammy now works on a variety of projects including book cover design/Illustrations, animations, web site design, and advertising/promotions graphics.

Sammy has designed/illustrated 30 bestselling book covers for authors including Ellen Hopkins, Scott Westerfeld, Lisa McMann, D. J. MacHale, Brandon Mull, Orson Scott Card, Catherine Fisher, Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie, Alexander Bracken, Rae Carson, Lanni Taylor,  Susan Ee and Holly Black.

“I’m a huge fan of your dust jackets! They definitely make our job at the store a lot easier. As I’m fond of saying, whoever said “don’t judge a book by its cover” wasn’t in the business!”

—Peter Glassman Founder/Owner at Books of Wonder

“I have no doubt that Sammy Yuen’s award-winning cover for my debut novel, Crank, helped launch not only the book, but also my successful YA career.”

New York Times bestselling author, Ellen Hopkins

“Sammy Yuen’s incredible covers for my WAKE trilogy are deeply beautiful, mysterious, intense. They tell a story all their own.”

New York Times bestselling author, Lisa McMann

“Working as both cover creator and interior designer of Leviathan, Sammy Yuen combined a novel’s worth of text and over fifty illustrations into an elegant and beautiful whole.”

New York Times bestselling author, Scott Westerfeld

“Sammy Yuen’s work is slick and sharp and lovely. The more you look at it, the more is unveiled.”

New York Times bestselling author, Holly Black

“Sammy Yuen’s vibrant cover designs and illustrations capture the essence of a story while tempting readers with a sly promise of what’s to come.”

New York Times bestselling author, D.J. MacHale

Five years ago today I started full-time freelancing. I would like to thank my friends and family for all their support. I would not have made it this far with out them.

iWatch

Last summer I had the opportunity go to Apple HQ in Cupertino, CA, to work on an iWatch app pre-iWatch launch. Designing for such a small screen was very challenging and eye opening.
